Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has charged newly inaugurated members of the Governing Council of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, to uphold integrity, diligence and strong commitment in order to strengthen the institution’s status as a centre of academic excellence.
The governor gave the charge at the inauguration of Rt. Hon. Festus Agas, Rt. Hon. Frank Enekorogha and Mr. Charles Ajuyah, SAN, as members of the university’s Governing Council, stressed that effective governance is central to the growth and credibility of any tertiary institution.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oborevwori said the inauguration was significant despite his tight schedule, noting that governing councils play a critical role in providing policy direction and oversight. He added that the appointments came at a strategic time as DELSU continues to consolidate its standing as a leading university in Nigeria and beyond.
“The Governing Council remains central to the effective governance of any university, providing policy direction and ensuring that institutional goals are achieved,” the governor said, adding that his administration deliberately appoints individuals of proven integrity, experience and distinction into governing councils of state-owned tertiary institutions.
He described the new council members as seasoned public servants and leaders, saying they were well qualified for the responsibility entrusted to them. According to him, “As members of the Governing Council, you carry the aspirations of thousands of students, staff, alumni and the entire people of Delta State. Your decisions will shape policies, influence academic direction and define the future of this great university for generations to come.”
The governor urged them to serve with transparency and dedication, expressing confidence that their wealth of experience would help DELSU continue to produce graduates who are academically sound, morally upright and socially responsible.
Responding on behalf of the appointees, Rt. Hon. Festus Agas thanked God and the Delta State Government for the opportunity to serve, describing the appointment as a great honour and a call to duty. He assured that the council would work harmoniously with the Vice-Chancellor and management to add value to the administration and advance the university’s mission.
Agas also commended Governor Oborevwori’s leadership style and the cordial relationship among the arms of government, which he said had translated into notable achievements within two and a half years. He praised the administration’s strides in peace and security, infrastructure, human capital development and healthcare.
“We thank the Governor for the confidence reposed in us. We will serve with dedication, loyalty and integrity,” Agas said, while praying for continued wisdom and strength for the governor to lead the state to greater heights.
