The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps halted a pipeline vandalism operation and seized equipment used by the suspects in Edo State. Operatives from the corps' Anti-Vandal Unit, working alongside the office of the senior special assistant to the Edo State governor on pipeline security, encountered the vandals on July 16, 2026, at about 1:00 p.m. along the NNPC pipeline corridor at Obazagbon in Uhunmwonde local government area.
When the suspected vandals spotted the security team, they opened fire to escape. The superior firepower of the NSCDC personnel overwhelmed them, forcing the criminals to flee into nearby bush and abandon their operation.
The corps recovered five long gas cylinders, two motorcycles, two shovels and two digger heads from the scene. DSC Ogbebor Efosa, the command's public relations officer, called the recovery another significant breakthrough in protecting national critical infrastructure.
The NSCDC warned criminal elements and their sponsors to stay away from oil and gas facilities. The command pledged to remain vigilant in guarding the nation's critical assets.
"Our operatives are already on the trail of the fleeing suspects. They cannot evade justice forever," Efosa added.
He vowed the corps would apprehend everyone involved in the crime, including sponsors and collaborators, and ensure they face the law.
The corps appealed to Edo residents to support security agencies by sharing credible and timely information. Such cooperation, they noted, would help prevent vandalism and other criminal activities in communities.
The NSCDC Edo State Command reaffirmed its commitment to working with sister security agencies and stakeholders. The partnership aims to protect critical national assets and ensure safety across the state.
