NLC and TUC Issue 14-Day Ultimatum for FG on Strike Notice

In a bold move to address the worsening economic situation and non-implementation of a 16-point agreement, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government.

The agreement, which was signed on October 2, 2023, aimed to alleviate the “massive suffering” caused by the hike in petrol prices and devaluation of the naira.

However, the government’s failure to implement the agreed-upon measures has led to widespread hardship and economic distress.

In a joint statement, the NLC and TUC expressed their disappointment, stating that despite their efforts to ensure industrial peace, the government has remained unresponsive to the plight of the masses and workers.

The organisations argue that the IMF and World Bank-induced policies have had severe consequences for the Nigerian people.

Effective February 9, 2024, the NLC and TUC have given the government a 14-day ultimatum to honour their part of the agreement.

Failure to do so could result in a nationwide strike, further exacerbating the country’s economic woes.

As the deadline looms, the Nigerian government must take swift action to address the concerns of the NLC and TUC.

Failure to do so could lead to widespread labour unrest and further damage to the nation’s already fragile economy.
