Nigerians’ Resilience: Absorbing Hardship and Moving Forward

Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker of the house of representatives, has highlighted the resilience of Nigerians amidst economic hardships.

According to Kalu, the people of Nigeria have the unique ability to absorb hardship and continue moving forward.

This characteristic has been a significant factor in maintaining the country’s food security and overall well-being.

In light of the current food scarcity in Nigeria, Chike Okafor from Imo has emphasized the need for immediate action to ensure the availability of food and the well-being of citizens.

The government must prioritize agriculture and provide subsidies to farm inputs and agricultural equipment to support smallholder farmers and agrarian communities.

The current state of food scarcity poses a grave threat to the health and livelihoods of millions of people.

Inadequate access to nutritious food not only leads to hunger and malnutrition but also exacerbates existing health conditions and undermines the overall development of the nation.

Aliyu Misau from Bauchi has pointed out that the price of a bag of MPK fertilizer has risen from N5,000 to N38,000 in just five years, indicating the urgency of providing subsidies to farmers.

By doing so, the government can ensure that the farming environment and arable lands are secured, thereby promoting a more stable and prosperous agricultural sector.

Despite the efforts to address the food crisis, the government has been criticized for lacking focus and vision and not taking planning seriously.

The recommendations made by the house of representatives in the 8th and 9th assemblies have not been implemented, further exacerbating the issue.

To tackle the food crisis effectively, the government must increase resources to support smallholder farmers and agrarian communities.

This includes providing short-term subsidies for necessary inputs, tools, and infrastructure to enhance food production.

Additionally, the farming environment must be secured to ensure that farmers can safely access their arable lands.

The resilience of the Nigerian people in absorbing hardship and moving forward is a testament to their strength and determination.

However, to address the current food crisis effectively, the government must focus on agriculture and provide subsidies to farmers while securing the farming environment.

By doing so, Nigeria can work towards a future of food security and improved well-being for its citizens.
