Nigeria, Senegal, Egypt and the other qualified teams for the 2023 African Cup of Nations

The 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to take place in Ivory Coast from January to February 2024, with 24 teams competing for continental glory. The qualification process is currently underway, with some teams already securing their spots in the final tournament.

Among the qualified teams are Nigeria, Senegal, and Egypt, three of the most successful and popular teams in Africa. Nigeria, the three-time champions, topped Group A with 14 points, ahead of Guinea-Bissau, who also qualified with 10 points. The Super Eagles finished their campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Sierra Leone on June 18, thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Senegal, the defending champions, dominated Group L with 16 points, winning five games and drawing one. The Lions of Teranga beat Congo 3-0 on June 18, with goals from Sadio Mane, Ismaila Sarr, and Famara Diedhiou. Senegal will be aiming to retain their title and add to their trophy cabinet.

Egypt, the record seven-time champions, qualified from Group D with 13 points, behind Comoros, who also made history by reaching their first AFCON with 10 points. The Pharaohs beat Togo 3-1 on June 14, with goals from Mohamed Salah, Mahmoud Trezeguet, and Mohamed Elneny.

Other qualified teams include Morocco and South Africa from Group K, Algeria and Burkina Faso from Group F, Tunisia and Equatorial Guinea from Group J, Zambia from Group H, Cape Verde from Group B, and Mali from Group G. The remaining six spots will be decided in September, when the final matchday of the group stage will take place.
