Nigeria needs medical Doctors to tackle dwindling health care services – Enabulele

The President of the World Medical Association, WMA, Dr Osahon Enabulele, has asserted that Nigeria needs more medical doctors to enable it to tackle the challenges faced by the healthcare delivery system in the country.

Dr Osahon Enabulele made this known at the 17th oath-taking/induction ceremony of the newly qualified medical doctors of the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo state.

While extolling the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion for establishing the first private university in Nigeria, Dr Enabulele called on the government at all levels to create more medical schools in the nation to enable it to solve the critical problem of limited medical doctors in the country.

He said, “I was here in 2009 to deliver the valedictory lecture. I knew what I saw then; So between 2009 and now, there has been progress upon progress, glory upon glory, and is nice that Chief Esama Igbinedion is living up to his commitment and aspirations, not only in establishing the first private university in the country but ensuring the University’s School of Medicine excels, with accommodation of excellence.

” l believe you listened to the speech of the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), in which he disclosed MDCN’s offer to give more support to the University, because of what they found on ground with regard to their commitment towards best practices.

‘” I want to say that, I am excited and wish the school and the university greater glory. I want to also put on record the tremendous efforts of the Vice Chancellor of the Igbinedion University Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, who has propelled the University to greater heights and progress.

“We must recognize this, and also the efforts of the Dean, School of Clinical Medicine, Prof. Dominic Osaghae, mni. They all are wonderful working together to ensure that excellence is the watchword in the school of medicine at the Igbinedion University Okada. So, I am very impressed with what I saw today at Igbinedion University Okada.

” We need more medical schools that are very standard with quality products from the medical schools, while we expect governments to work more to put effective mechanisms in place to retain these products, rather than producing for other economies. So, I think it’s good to have such things like this so that other schools would draw inspiration from Igbinedion University. I congratulate them for the great feats they have achieved”.

Given their addresses, the Provost, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuade Olubuse 11 College of Health Sciences, Prof. Jacob Unuigbe and Dean, School of Clinical Medicine, Prof. Dominic Osaghae, mni, advised the newly inducted doctors to be good ambassadors of the institution.

They advised them to use the knowledge they acquired while in the institution to solve the problems confronting the healthcare system in Nigeria.

They thanked the parents and guardians of the doctors for ensuring their children graduated and were inducted as medical doctors to join in promoting the medical profession in Nigeria.
