June 12 stands as one of Nigeria's most pivotal dates in political history, the African Democratic Congress says. The party's National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, made this assertion in a Democracy Day statement released Thursday in Abuja.

According to him, the date symbolises Nigerians' unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. It represents the principle that citizen voices matter, votes carry weight, and governments draw power from the people.

"June 12 remains one of the most important dates in our nation's political history," Abdullahi told reporters. He stressed it serves as a constant reminder that legitimacy flows from the governed.

But celebrating the day shouldn't stop at remembering past victories, he argued. Democracy Day offers a chance to evaluate how far Nigeria has truly progressed as a nation.

A nation's democratic health shouldn't be measured only by years under civilian rule, Abdullahi noted. Real progress shows up in improved living standards, expanded freedoms, and genuine opportunities for citizens.

Nigeria still faces serious threats to democratic development, the ADC spokesman warned. Insecurity, economic struggles, and eroding trust in institutions continue to undermine the system.

Families and businesses are reeling from soaring prices across all sectors. Food, transport, healthcare, housing and education costs have climbed beyond reach for many.

"Our young people should be driving national growth, but many are struggling to find hope," Abdullahi said. Thousands are desperate to leave the country in search of better prospects elsewhere.

The party rejects the idea that these crises are unavoidable, he stated firmly. Strong governance can turn things around, the ADC believes.

Security strategies must be data-driven and technology-backed, according to the party's position. Community input and local responsiveness are equally essential for lasting peace.

ADC's platform centres on economic overhauls that ease the cost of living burden. It backs small business support and genuine improvements to Nigerians' quality of life.

Transparency and accountability will anchor the party's approach to governance. Food security and institutional strengthening form part of efforts to rebuild public trust.

"Government must be judged by results, not by speeches or excuses," Abdullahi emphasised. Success means actual improvements in how Nigerians live day to day.

The ADC congratulated citizens on Democracy Day and called for renewed commitment. Building a safer, more prosperous and responsible democracy remains the shared task ahead.
