The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised what it calls a pattern of judicial decisions that have destabilised opposition movements and weakened rival political platforms ahead of the 2027 elections. In a statement posted on its X account on Tuesday, the PDP expressed concern about the ruling All Progressives Congress administering gifts of luxury homes and court facilities to senior judges.
The opposition party acknowledged that judges deserve quality accommodation and working conditions. However, it argued that packaging these public investments with political celebration converts what should be a basic entitlement into a display of executive influence.
"When the executive positions itself as a benevolent patron providing houses to the judges who will preside over high-stakes election petitions and constitutional disputes, the appearance of neutrality vanishes," the party stated.
The PDP added: "He who pays the piper inevitably dictates the tune." It further warned that this relationship between the executive and judiciary has already produced consequences visible across Nigeria's political landscape.
"The courts have increasingly mutated into a theatre of contradictory injunctions and judgments by error," the party said in the statement. The PDP's remarks reflect growing tensions over the independence of Nigeria's judiciary and its role in political disputes.
