NERC Issues New Directives to Discos Following Electricity Tariff Increase

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued five new directives to electricity distribution companies (Discos) following the recent tariff increase.

The updated guidelines aim to ensure a smooth transition and protect the interests of electricity consumers in Nigeria.

NERC’s recent notice, signed by Deputy General Manager of Market Competition and Rates, Abba Terab, outlines the new directives after the Commission authorized an increase in the electricity tariff per unit from about N66 to N225 for the different Discos in Nigeria.

The new directives include:

The new tariff should only be applied to the 480 newly approved Band A feeders, ensuring that the increase is targeted and regulated.

Discos must immediately post on their websites the schedule of affected Band A feeders, as determined by the rate review, to keep consumers informed and updated.

All Discos must establish a portal on their website by April 10, 2024, allowing customers to check their current bands by entering their meter or account numbers, providing a transparent and user-friendly process for customers.

Customers who were overcharged at the updated rate must be reimbursed through energy tokens by Thursday, April 11, 2024, with documentation of compliance required by April 12, 2024.

NERC will closely monitor the Discos’ compliance with these directives, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the new rules and regulations.

These directives are part of NERC’s efforts to ensure a transparent and efficient electricity distribution system in Nigeria.

By providing clear guidelines and monitoring compliance, the Commission aims to protect the interests of consumers and promote a stable and reliable energy supply.
