National Assembly to Complete 1999 Constitution Amendment in 24 Months

The Senate Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution has announced its plan to collaborate with members of the House of Representatives and critical stakeholders in the amendment processes.

The committee, led by Sen. Barau Jibrin, has promised to complete the process in 24 months.

During the inaugural meeting of the committee on Wednesday in Abuja, Jibrin emphasized that the committee’s goal is to process proposed amendments to the constitution rather than rewriting it.

He also stated that members of the committee would be guided by a work plan to ensure the completion of the assignment within the next two years.

The committee plans to work in synergy with their counterparts in the House of Representatives and engage critical stakeholders in a way that will ensure the bills passed by the National Assembly will be approved by the State Houses of Assembly and assented to by the President.

Jibrin urged members of the committee to be committed to the constitutional review, as some of the issues already raised by critical stakeholders are quite delicate.

He also expressed confidence in the members’ experience and knowledge of the nation, which he believes will be beneficial to the work of the committee.

The National Assembly is taking steps to amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution once again.

The Senate Committee has set a timeline of 24 months to complete the process and is determined to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the success of the amendment.
