NASU Demands 4 Months’ Salaries from President Tinubu Amid Shutdown Threats

In a emergency meeting of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) branch chairmen and Inter-University Centres, NASU National President Hassan Makolo called on President Bola Tinubu to direct prompt payment of members’ four months’ salaries currently being withheld.

The union is yet to be paid the four months’ withheld salaries, while other unions have been paid in full.

The call comes after President Tinubu had previously given a directive that the withheld salaries of unions that had embarked on strike during the last regime should be paid.

NASU members are concerned about the non-payment, as it contradicts the agreement signed with the government, which included a no victimisation clause.

According to NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the non-payment of the four months’ salaries to NASU members, while other unions have been paid, is a form of victimisation.

The union believes that if there is any union that deserves to be paid first, it should be NASU.

The government’s stance on “no work, no pay” is also being questioned by NASU, as they argue that this contradicts their agreement and the recent directive from President Tinubu.

NASU members are now threatening to go on strike and shut down if their four months’ withheld salaries are not paid in the next one or two weeks.

As the situation unfolds, the focus is on President Tinubu’s response to NASU’s demands and the potential impact on industrial harmony within the sector.

With the government already facing various challenges, the resolution of this issue is crucial for maintaining a stable and productive educational environment in Nigeria.
