Mexico kicked off the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa on Wednesday evening. It was a rematch of their opening fixture from 2010, which ended goalless.

The hosts dominated from kickoff. They didn't wait long to strike.

Julián Quiñones found the back of the net just nine minutes in. Raúl Jiménez added the second goal in the 67th minute to seal the win.

South Africa's task became increasingly difficult as the match wore on. Two red cards left them down to nine men.

Mexico also saw Cesar Montes sent off late in the game. But they held firm to claim all three points from their tournament opener.
