Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have won the CAF Champions League for 2025/26. They defeated Morocco's AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate.
Sundowns secured their first leg victory 1-0 at home. Sunday's second leg in Rabat ended 1-1, sealing the continental crown.
The match in Rabat was tense and hostile throughout. AS FAR earned an early penalty when a Sundowns player lunged in the box.
Mohamed Rabie Hrimat converted from the spot for the hosts. It put AS FAR ahead in the first half.
But Sundowns grew into the game as it progressed. Teboho Mokoena struck brilliantly into the top corner late in the first half to equalize.
AS FAR won another penalty when goalkeeper Ronwen Williams collided with a home player. Hrimat stepped up to take it again on 76 minutes.
Williams made the crucial save this time. His penalty heroics—displayed before at the Africa Cup of Nations—proved decisive once more.
Sundowns held firm to the final whistle. They're now South Africa's most successful club in African continental competition.
Coach Miguel Cardoso has now won two major trophies since 2014. This title marks Sundowns' first continental success in a decade.
Earlier in the competition, they demolished Nigeria's Remo Stars 7-1 across two legs. They'll pocket $6 million for winning the championship.
Their continental success brings further rewards on the global stage. Sundowns have qualified for both the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
There's more work ahead though. They face Algeria's USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on October 31, 2026.
