A Kano magistrate court has remanded Yasmin Shehu in custody pending trial. She faces charges over the death of her boyfriend, Aminu Wali.
The incident stemmed from a dispute about a phone charger that turned violent. Magistrate Hauwa Abba Musa made the remand order at the Nomansland court on Thursday.
Prosecution told the court the two were alone in a room when the argument erupted. What began as a disagreement quickly escalated into a physical fight.
During the confrontation, Wali sprayed tear gas at Shehu. She then grabbed the canister from him and sprayed it back in his direction.
Shehu allegedly struck him on the head with an object. The blow proved fatal, according to prosecutors.
State counsel Abdulkareem Kabir Maude, who is the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, led the prosecution team. He presented the charges before the court.
Court registrar Mohammed Tudun Wada read and explained the charges to Shehu in a language she understands. The defendant's lawyer, Barrister Abdurazak Abubakar, asked for copies of all court documents.
Prosecutors requested more time to prepare their case. They said the Ministry of Justice needed to issue legal advice on the matter.
Magistrate Musa granted both requests without opposition. She ordered Shehu held in a correctional facility while the case continues.
Hearing resumes on July 7, 2026. That's when the court will take further steps in the matter.
