Malam Mustapha Yahaya Maru, a teacher from Maru, has been killed by his abductors even after his family paid N3 million to secure his release. Journalist Bakatsine, who covers conflict and insecurity across Nigeria's North-West region, disclosed the killing on X on Saturday.

Maru was taken along the Anka Road in Zamfara State and his family rushed to meet the ransom demand in hopes of bringing him home alive. The kidnappers murdered him regardless of the payment, according to Bakatsine's report.

"Paying ransom offers no guarantee of survival," Bakatsine wrote in the post. He called for prayers for Maru's soul and for his grieving family and loved ones.

The teacher was abducted in May alongside several colleagues as they travelled back to the Federal Government College, FGC, Anka, in Zamfara State. Bakatsine had reported the abduction at the time and appealed for prayers for the victims' safe release.

The worsening security crisis in Zamfara has claimed numerous lives in recent months. State authorities have not yet made an official statement on Maru's death as of now.
