Joeboy Urges Support for African Award Shows: “Empower Our Institutions in Africa”

Afrobeats star Joeboy has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for African artists and fans to support and invest in local award shows, rather than focusing solely on international accolades such as the Grammys.

During an appearance on The Big Convo podcast in Ghana, Joeboy emphasized the importance of recognizing the value of African awards and institutions.

The Nigerian hitmaker pointed out that the Grammys is an American award show, despite its global recognition.

He believes that African artists should show the same level of interest and support for African award shows as they do for international ones.

“I think we should unapologetically be ourselves and also empower our institutions here in Africa…Grammys is a great award but it’s still an American award.

It’s just seen as a global award because of its positioning, but we make it look like that it’s the biggest award an African artist can ever get,” Joeboy said.

The Afrobeats star also called on his fellow artists to invest in the local music scene, emphasizing the need to build and strengthen local infrastructure and institutions.

By doing so, artists can create a more sustainable and prosperous environment for the Afrobeats genre to thrive in.

Joeboy’s comments echo those of other Nigerian artists, such as Bella Shmurda, who have recently spoken out about the importance of valuing and nurturing the Afrobeats genre and its local roots.

As the global popularity of Afrobeats continues to grow, it is essential for African artists to remain connected to their local music scenes and support the development of the industry at home.

Joeboy’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in local institutions and celebrating the achievements of African artists on their own continent.
