Daura woke to tragedy on Saturday. A 96-year-old woman, Hajiya Umma Husaini, was killed in her home.
Her granddaughter, Aisha Muktar, allegedly attacked her with a mortar in the early morning hours. Neighbours found Hajiya Umma unconscious and bleeding heavily.
They rushed her to Daura Federal Medical Centre immediately. "She was bleeding profusely when we arrived," one witness told reporters.
Medical staff fought to save her life. But she died within hours of admission.
Hajiya Umma's eldest son, Muktar Husaini, confirmed the attack to Daily Trust. He said the killing shocked the entire family.
"My mother was attacked and later died at the hospital," he noted. "We are all in shock because she had no history of misunderstanding with anyone in Daura."
According to Muktar, his mother was a woman of peace. She never quarrelled with anyone and earned respect from all who knew her.
"My mother was a very calm and patient woman," he told reporters. "She was respected by everyone who knew her."
Family members described her as remarkably resilient despite serious health struggles. Hajiya Umma had battled diabetes for years.
Both her legs were amputated due to the disease. Yet she remained prayerful and strong-willed until her death.
News of the incident spread rapidly through Daura. Sympathisers flocked to the family home as the community grappled with the loss.
Residents struggled to understand how such violence could claim a woman they all regarded as harmless. Her death sparked grief across the town.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing. DSP Sadik Aliyu, Katsina's police spokesperson, confirmed the suspect is in custody.
Investigators are working to establish what triggered the attack. The motive behind the incident remains unclear.
Community leaders have condemned the killing strongly. They're calling on authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about domestic violence in Nigeria. Elderly persons face serious risks within their own households.
Residents are demanding justice for Hajiya Umma. They want authorities to ensure the investigation is conducted fairly and comprehensively.
