A minibus crashed on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on Thursday morning. Five people died in the accident near Iyana Egbado.
Two of the dead were children. Three others killed were adults—one man and two women.
A white Mazda E2000 bus was involved in the collision. The vehicle had 20 passengers aboard when it crashed.
Ten more people suffered injuries of varying severity. Five passengers walked away without harm.
Odunsi Afolabi is the FRSC spokesperson for Ogun State. He confirmed the crash occurred at 11:12 a.m. on Thursday.
Rescue teams arrived within five minutes of the report. They reached the scene by 11:20 a.m., according to Afolabi.
Investigators blamed excessive speed for the collision. Overloading the vehicle also contributed to the crash, officials said.
The weather was cloudy at the time. Road conditions were paved, Afolabi noted.
Injured victims got treatment at two hospitals. General Hospital in Ifo and Oreofe Specialist Hospital in Itori received patients.
The bodies were taken to General Hospital morgue. Officials deposited them in Ifo for preservation.
Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi expressed sympathy for bereaved families. He urged drivers to follow traffic laws strictly.
Speeding endangers lives on Nigerian roads, Ogunjobi warned. He called road safety a collective responsibility.
Motorists must avoid overloading vehicles, the commander stressed. Traffic violations during festivals pose serious risks to commuters.
