The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has taken legal action against the President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for alleged defamation.
Emefiele is seeking a staggering N25 billion in damages and a public apology from Akpabio for the alleged defamatory remarks.
The lawsuit comes in the wake of a statement made by Akpabio at a recent event, which Emefiele and his legal team believe to be false, distorted, and clearly aimed at disparaging his character.
The legal notice, dated February 19, 2024, outlines the demands of Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa, SAN.
According to the notice, Akpabio has been given a deadline to comply with the demands, or face legal proceedings in the court of law.
The legal action has sparked a heated debate among the Nigerian public, with many expressing their opinions on the matter.
This case highlights the importance of responsible speech and the potential consequences of making defamatory statements.
It remains to be seen how the lawsuit will unfold, but one thing is certain: the outcome will have a significant impact on both Emefiele and Akpabio, as well as the broader Nigerian political landscape.
