Edo Guber Election 2024: A Battle of Heavyweights

Former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Salihu Lukman, has highlighted the fierce competition that awaits in the Edo State Governorship election, set to take place in September 2024.

With the emergence of Asue Ighodalo (PDP), Olumide Akpata (Labour Party), and Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC) as candidates, the race is shaping up to be a battle of political heavyweights.

Dr. Lukman emphasized the need for the ruling party to field a popular candidate in order to stand a chance against the well-accomplished and respected opposition.

He pointed out that the mere fact that he could stand out and successfully become the arrowhead against the imposition of a candidate in the APC for the Edo 2024 election suggests that he enjoys strong support within the party.

However, the party chieftain also expressed concern over the February 17th primary, which was marred with allegations of malpractices.

He noted that this was almost exactly the script acted in 2020 that produced Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the APC candidate for the 2020 Edo State Governorship election.

Dr. Lukman commended the APC National Working Committee (NWC) under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for quickly addressing the issue and preventing another electoral disaster.

The reorganised APC Primary Election Committee, led by Otu, allowed for a fair contest and ultimately produced the winner of the primary.

As the Edo Guber Election 2024 approaches, it remains to be seen how the political landscape will shift and whether the ruling party can successfully navigate the challenges posed by formidable opposition candidates.
