The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), through its Community Development and Public Enlightenment (CD&PE) Department, has taken its monthly anti-social vices campaign to Orogun Grammar School in Ughelli North Local Government Area, reinforcing the message that “School is not a scam.”
The sensitisation programme, held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, is part of DESOPADEC’s ongoing efforts to reorient students and youths across its mandate areas against negative narratives that undermine formal education.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, CD&PE, Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade, represented by Mrs. Etume Okeoghene, said the Commission remains committed to promoting education as a foundation for societal development.
“We are here to let you know that school is not a scam. School is a bedrock to the development of every society,” she stated.
She explained that DESOPADEC, as an interventionist agency positioned by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and led by Board Chairman John Obukokwho Nani and Managing Director/CEO Festus Ochonogor, is determined to sensitise young people against the dangers inherent in the “school is a scam” mantra.
According to her, the campaign is a monthly initiative of the department and will be extended to other schools within the Commission’s mandate areas.
A major highlight of the programme was a lively debate between students. The proponents of the motion, Miss Ovie Justice and Omovie Favour (SS2), and the opponents, Benjamin Praise and Aghogho Oghenegaren (SS1), engaged in a keen contest. At the end of the debate, the proposing side emerged first and second, while the opposing side placed third and fourth.
Other speakers, including Mr. James Ajevabor and Elizabeth Odisu, strongly rejected the notion that school is a scam. They emphasised that development, knowledge transfer, and formal education would not be possible without the school system. They also warned students against social vices such as drug abuse, cultism, prostitution, and early child marriage, urging them to stay focused on their education.
Earlier, the Vice Principal of Orogun Grammar School, Mrs. Ighomuaye Veronica, who represented the Principal, welcomed the DESOPADEC team and expressed appreciation for selecting the school for the enlightenment campaign. She also commended Mr. Sylvester Ovbije, the Urhobo representative on the DESOPADEC Board, and other board members for their support.
The event concluded with the presentation of gift items to the debate winners and participants, amid applause from students and staff.
Among those in attendance were Azubuke O. Lucky, VP Academy OGS; Odumenya Aghogho Osawota, Coordinator, DESOPADEC Afiesere Area Office; Igbree Benson; Onduku Frances, Unit Head; Afe Robinson Oromuhi; Akpo Bawo Ofere; and Mr. Bobby, among others.
