Cross River State has claimed a top finish at Nigeria's Third National Girls in ICT Competition 2026. Federal Government Girls' College (FGGC), Cross River, secured second place among over 3,700 young female participants from across the nation.

Governor Bassey Otu praised the remarkable performance. He called it powerful proof of the state's growing focus on education, innovation and digital skills.

Special Education Centre in Bauchi won first place overall. Resonance Science School in Abia finished third, with FGGC Cross River claiming the runner-up spot.

The competition took place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. It was organised by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

Young female technologists showcased innovative projects throughout the event. Otu said the achievement marked a significant milestone for his state's ambitions.

"This outstanding success by our brilliant students fills us with immense pride," the governor told reporters. "Cross River is blessed with exceptionally gifted young minds."

He noted the competition involved fierce nationwide competition. "To place among the top three reflects discipline, creativity and hard work," Otu added.

According to him, these students have become worthy ambassadors for Cross River. Their success shows what determination can achieve in education.

Otu emphasised that the competition's focus aligns with his administration's goals. His government wants to equip young people with skills for the future.

"We live in a world driven by technology and innovation," he said. "Our girls have shown that Cross River produces the innovators Nigeria needs."

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu addressed finalists at the awards ceremony. She urged them to stay "curious, confident and courageous" in their pursuits.

Tinubu called on the girls to use technology for solving societal problems. She emphasised using innovation to uplift communities across the country.

Governor Otu described her remarks as timely and deeply inspiring. He highlighted her emphasis on curiosity as the foundation of breakthroughs.

"Every invention begins with a bold idea," Otu noted in his words. "Her Excellency's message will inspire many more girls to pursue science and technology."

He particularly commended the First Lady's focus on community impact. Technology, according to her message, should serve people, not just individuals.

Cross River's performance reflects sustained investment in quality education. The state has prioritised digital literacy and STEM subjects in recent years.

FGGC Cross River has become known for academic excellence nationwide. Its students regularly compete well at national competitions and examinations.

Otu's administration has announced plans to strengthen ICT infrastructure in schools. More funding will support science and technology programmes statewide.

Education officials in the state expressed their delight at the result. They promised continued support for girls pursuing technology-related fields.

The girls who competed have become role models for younger students. Their success opens pathways for more young females in tech careers.
