A few days ago, Vozinha was a name known mainly to Cape Verde football fans and followers of Portuguese second-division side Chaves. Today, the 40-year-old goalkeeper is one of the tournament's biggest stories.

His display against Spain in Atlanta has rewritten football history. Cape Verde drew 0-0 with the reigning European champions and World Cup favourites in their debut appearance.

Vozinha made seven crucial saves that night. He frustrated a Spanish side loaded with world-class talent and secured his nation's first-ever World Cup point.

Before the match, he had fewer than 50,000 Instagram followers. Within days, that number rocketed to more than 14 million.

He's now one of the tournament's fastest-rising social media personalities. The goalkeeper spoke about the sudden attention with gratitude and disbelief.

"I just have to say thank you to all of them," he told reporters after the match. "To all the followers who've supported me."

According to him, the explosion caught him completely off guard. "That is unpredictable; I didn't expect that," he told the Men in Blazers podcast.

He continued: "Things run fast on Instagram, but I didn't believe it. I still don't believe it, but it is what it is."

Vozinha's rise didn't happen overnight, though. His story is built on decades of persistence and sacrifice.

Born in Mindelo on São Vicente island, he faced obstacles from childhood. His height worked against him despite his talent.

"I was one of the best keepers on my island but as a kid I was a bit small," he recalled in a 2024 FIFA interview. "Though I was the best, I didn't get picked in trials because of my height."

While other Cape Verdean players sought opportunities in Portugal early on, his path was slower. He didn't turn professional until his mid-twenties.

Vozinha joined local side Batuque in 2007 and began a journey across multiple continents. He played in Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus and Slovakia.

Throughout those years, he remained largely unknown outside African and lower-division European circles. His family worked hard to support his dreams.

His father served in the military while his mother held down jobs to help. He's spoken emotionally about his grandparents' crucial role in his life.

After the Spain match, tears flowed when he reflected on their sacrifices. "They gave everything for me, for my life," he said.

Cape Verde entered the tournament as massive outsiders. The island nation has a population of just over 500,000.

Spain arrived as trophy contenders with a squad full of superstars. Yet for 90 minutes, Vozinha held firm in Atlanta.

His seven saves rank among the tournament's finest goalkeeping performances. At 40 years and 12 days old, he became the oldest player to debut for his country at a World Cup.

One of football's greatest underdog moments had arrived. A veteran goalkeeper unknown to most of the world had just changed everything.
