Court Drops Treasonable Felony Charges Against Sowore in Landmark Ruling

In a stunning development at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the Nigerian government, through the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), has withdrawn the treasonable felony charges against Omoyele Sowore.

The court struck out the charges following the application of a notice of discontinuance filed by the AGF.

The decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal saga involving Mr. Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, who was arrested in August 2019 during the #RevolutionNow protest.

The charges against him included treasonable felony and other offenses related to his alleged involvement in the protest.

The court’s ruling comes after a series of hearings and deliberations, with the AGF ultimately deciding to discontinue the case.

The move has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some seeing it as a victory for free speech and the right to protest, while others remain skeptical about the government’s motives.

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and activism, has been vocal in his criticism of the Nigerian government and its policies.

The #RevolutionNow protest, which he spearheaded, sought to bring attention to various issues plaguing the country, including corruption, insecurity, and economic hardship.

The court’s decision to strike out the charges against Mr. Sowore is likely to have far-reaching implications for the future of political activism and protest in Nigeria.

It remains to be seen how this development will impact the political landscape and the ongoing struggle for social justice and reform in the country.
