Eric Chelle has a message for Nigeria's domestic-based players after the Super Eagles' commanding 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday.
Femi Azeez scored twice at The Valley in London to secure the win. Chelle had selected six NPFL players for the tournament squad.
Michael Atata, Aderemi Adeoye, Tosin Oyedokun, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igbokwe, and Elias Ochobi made the trip to Europe. It marked an important opportunity for the home-based contingent.
During his post-match remarks, the Malian tactician acknowledged the challenge facing these players. "I need some time to work with them and be part of the small project," Chelle told reporters.
He understands their situation isn't straightforward. Several players were competing in Europe for perhaps the first time in their careers.
"The pressure was high for them," he noted. "But I am happy with what they showed to Nigeria."
Chelle stressed that the nation's football programme won't pause for integration. He recognizes the difficulty these players face adjusting to the international stage.
Despite the obstacles, the coach expressed satisfaction with their contributions against Zimbabwe. Their performances demonstrated potential for future selection.
Nigeria advances to face South Africa in the Unity Cup final. Chelle will continue evaluating his home-based talent moving forward.
