In a powerful move to tackle rising social vices, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ughelli Unit, on June 12 launched a city-wide awareness campaign against hard drugs, sexual abuse, kidnapping, cultism, and other societal ills plaguing Ughelli metropolis in Delta State.
The campaign, which coincided with Nigeria’s Democracy Day, featured a sensitization rally through major streets of Ughelli, drawing attention to issues such as child abuse, rape, domestic violence, armed robbery, jungle justice, and extra-judicial killings.
National President of CDHR, Comrade Dr. Kehinde Prince Taiga, who led the awareness drive, emphasized that the rally was aimed at rescuing vulnerable youths from destructive lifestyles and reorienting them toward a responsible future. He hailed the Nigeria Police for their strong support during the exercise.
“Youths are the backbone of any society,” Dr. Taiga said. “If we fail to steer them right, we risk breeding a future filled with chaos. We are here to remind them that moral values and education are the keys to lasting change.”
Speaking during the event, Hon. Solomon Agbini, CDHR Ughelli Unit Coordinator and a councillor in Ughelli North Local Government, urged youths to shun crime and embrace productive ventures. He particularly debunked the notion that education is a scam.
“Education is never a scam,” Agbini stressed. “If there were no doctors, lawyers, or engineers—what would our society be? Even the phones we use today were made possible by education.”
He advised young people to pursue formal schooling or vocational training to better their lives and contribute meaningfully to society. According to him, every youth belongs to a potential profession—whether in academics, trade, or skilled labor.
The rally ended with renewed calls for responsible youth engagement, civic awareness, and the rejection of harmful behaviors that endanger lives and communities.
