The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, will be serving his six-month prison term in the male section of the prison, following his conviction for Naira abuse by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Despite concerns for his safety due to his sexual orientation, prison authorities have promised to ensure Bobrisky’s protection from any potential danger while in custody.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court sentenced Bobrisky on Friday for mutilating Naira notes.
During court proceedings, Bobrisky, a transgender personality, declared himself as male, which was a significant factor in the decision to assign him to a male-specific facility.
Speaking on the matter, the NoS spokesperson confirmed that they will abide by what was submitted in court and that Bobrisky will be assigned to the male section of the prison.
The spokesperson also addressed concerns about his safety, stating that Bobrisky should not be afraid of sexual assault from other male inmates, as prison officials will ensure he is well-protected.
This case has garnered attention due to Bobrisky’s status as a prominent transgender personality in Nigeria and the implications for the treatment of individuals with diverse gender identities within the country’s correctional system.
As Bobrisky begins his prison term, the NCoS’s commitment to his safety is a crucial step in ensuring equal treatment and protection for all individuals in custody, regardless of their gender identity.
