Planning an event is just the start. Real professionalism shows in how you execute that vision.
Waiters are crucial to the hospitality industry. They're often the most direct contact guests have with service providers.
That's why the Association of Professional Party Organisers and Event Managers of Nigeria gathered over 1,000 waiters in Lagos recently. The goal was to celebrate their work and sharpen their skills.
The conference was titled "Beyond the Tray: The Power Behind Service." APPOEMN organized it to mark International Waiters' Day.
Babatunde Olawuyi, the association's vice president, spoke at the training session. He stressed that waiters deserve recognition as key players in Nigeria's hospitality sector.
"Their roles extend far beyond just serving guests at events," Olawuyi noted. He added that many in the profession don't see it as a viable career with growth potential.
APPOEMN is working to shift this perception. According to him, the association wants to eliminate poor standards and build professionalism across the industry.
Olawuyi explained the broader aim of the initiative. It's designed to boost confidence, help participants find purpose, and show them their position today doesn't limit their tomorrow.
"We want to change their mindset, build their confidence, and help them see they're vital to any business," he told reporters.
Adeola Sessi-Traore heads education for APPOEMN. She said the association is ramping up professional training and partnering with industry players.
The goal is simple. Nigerian event practitioners must match international standards and compete globally.
According to her, the association prioritizes education, standardization, and lifelong learning. These pillars strengthen professionalism throughout the sector.
"We focus on ensuring practitioners follow internationally recognized best practices," Sessi-Traore explained. She emphasized that standards and international guidelines shape everything the association does.
Why focus on waiters and hospitality staff? Sessi-Traore answered directly.
These professionals shape customer experience and drive event success. They're at the heart of what makes occasions memorable.
While service delivery forms the industry's backbone, the association wants more. Members should pursue excellence, create impact, and grow professionally.
Bolatito Elizabeth Okolie attended as special guest of honour. She's chief executive of Bonnix Drinks.
Okolie urged waiters and hospitality workers to commit to continuous improvement. She stressed professionalism and innovation as non-negotiable.
