Russia pounded Ukraine with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles overnight in one of its largest aerial strikes yet. At least four people died and around 100 others sustained injuries in the coordinated assault.
Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Russian warplanes also targeted other regions across the country.
Residential buildings took direct hits in the capital and surrounding areas. A school, an opera house, and a museum also suffered damage.
Moscow's defence ministry claimed the strikes used the Oreshnik hypersonic missile. According to the ministry, the assault was retaliation for what it called Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Kyiv rejected that claim outright. Officials there denied launching any such attacks.
European leaders swiftly condemned the bombardment. Concerns grew about potential further escalation in the conflict that President Vladimir Putin started in 2022.
A massive explosion ripped through a military train in Pakistan's Balochistan province, killing at least 20 people. Around 70 others were injured in the blast near Chaman Phatak station in Quetta.
Several coaches derailed and two carriages overturned from the force of the explosion. Service members and their families heading home for Eid celebrations were aboard the train.
The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed it carried out the attack as a suicide bombing. Pakistani authorities have not yet confirmed the claim.
Burnt-out train carriages littered the scene. Nearby vehicles also suffered damage as rescue operations unfolded.
Donald Trump says a long-term agreement with Iran has been "largely negotiated" and is nearly done. He added that reopening the Strait of Hormuz would be part of the deal.
Talks are moving forward with input from Gulf leaders including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Trump noted a broader peace framework is taking shape.
Iranian officials acknowledged some progress in negotiations. They warned, however, that significant disagreements still remain unresolved.
Months of regional tensions preceded these discussions. A ceasefire came earlier this year after the US-Israel conflict with Iran threatened energy supplies and global oil markets.

A 65-year-old Malaysian staying in a nearby hotel died from falling debris, authorities identified. Investigators are now looking into what caused the building to collapse.
