ASUU-Students should be given grants, not loans

The lecturers’ group of Bauchi State, ASUU, has repeated its wish to say no to loans and yes to grants for their students’ learning.

The ASUU boss of Bauchi, Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, spoke this on the day of giving scholarships to 19 poor students in the area at the ATBU, Bauchi.

Dr. Maigoro asked, “Who will settle the debt? What will happen to those who can’t get it? The students will suffer in their minds because of the debt while they are still learning. This will make them do badly.

“The idea that they will finish with a debt of more than N4m and no way to pay it back is more suffering for their minds.”

He said that the ASUU of Bauchi was trying to know how many students may leave school at the end of this term, hoping to make the government change its mind on the loans and give grants instead.

Before that, the ASUU leader of ATBU, Mr. Ibrahim Inuwa, said that the union would keep being a good group by fighting for the good of all in higher education.

He said that the scholarship event, which happens every year, would always look for smart but poor students to honour and help.
