Asamoah Gyan has sympathized with Nigeria after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Ghanaian legend made the comments following a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss.
Nigeria lost 4-3 on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African playoff final last November. It was a crushing end to their World Cup dreams.
With 48 teams now competing in the tournament, ten African nations will participate in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Many observers believed Nigeria would secure one of those spots.
Gyan reflected on the fierce competition between Ghana and Nigeria during an appearance on SuperSport's Soccer Africa. He noted that the two West African rivals share a "healthy rivalry" despite not sharing a border.
"It's quite unfortunate," Gyan told the show. "Nigeria possesses a strong team, and the rivalry between our nations is remarkable."
Gyan acknowledged that while Ivory Coast remained close to Ghana, the competitive fire with Nigeria remained special. He emphasized the distinction between brotherly relations and genuine sporting competition.
Nigeria now faces an unprecedented milestone. Back-to-back World Cup absences mark the first time this has happened since their debut appearance in 1994.
The Super Eagles' elimination has disappointed millions of supporters across the country. Analysts had expected them to navigate the African qualifying rounds with relative ease.
