AFCON 2023: Captain Musa and Omeruo on the Brink of History

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and dependable center-back Kenneth Omeruo are on the verge of making history as the first two Nigerian footballers to win the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title twice.

The duo was part of the triumphant Nigerian team that secured the title at the AFCON 2013 finals in South Africa.

As the Super Eagles prepare to face the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the AFCON 2023 at the Alssanne Ouattara Stadium, Ebimpe, Abidjan, on Sunday, a win for Nigeria would cement Musa and Omeruo’s names in Nigerian football history.

The two players have the opportunity to achieve a feat that eluded legendary Nigerian footballers such as Austine Jay Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Mutiu Adepoju, Daniel Amokachi, Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, and Victor Ikpeba.

These celebrated players came close to winning the AFCON title twice, having won in 1994 but were denied the chance for a second win by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in 2000.

At the AFCON 2023, Omeruo has been a consistent presence, featuring in all five matches for Nigeria, while Musa is yet to make an appearance.

As the final approaches, the Super Eagles are determined to secure the title and make history for their captain and star defender.

With the stakes high and the eyes of the continent upon them, the Super Eagles are poised to deliver a memorable performance in the AFCON 2023 final.

The outcome will not only determine the fate of the team but also the legacy of two of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers.
