The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced its intention to disconnect the electricity supply to barracks and 84 government agencies due to their outstanding debt of over N47.1 billion.
The company issued a notice of disconnection on Monday, February 19, 2024, requesting that the MDAs settle their outstanding debts within 10 days to avoid the possibility of experiencing a blackout beginning on February 28, 2024.
This decision comes after the company’s previous attempts to make the MDAs honor their obligations have not yielded the desired results.
The affected government agencies include the Ministry of Finance, Information, Budget, Works and Housing, barracks, Nigeria Police Force, Presidential Villa, CBN Governor, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and state liaison offices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The AEDC’s decision to disconnect the electricity supply to these MDAs highlights the importance of timely payment for services rendered and the consequences of failing to meet financial obligations.
It also emphasizes the need for a more efficient and effective power distribution system in Nigeria.
As the deadline approaches, it remains to be seen if the affected MDAs will settle their outstanding debts and avoid the looming disconnection.
In the meantime, the situation serves as a reminder to all government agencies and organizations to prioritize the timely payment of their bills to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply of essential services.
