Police kill two suspected armed robbers, as mob sets two other ablaze in Delta

…As Police, Vigilante vowed to make Ughelli, its environs too hot for criminals

 

Police in ‘A’ Division Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday gunned down two suspected armed robbers in a gun duel which lasted for 20 minutes, even as one the gang member escaped with a bullet wound.

 

The police had foiled the robbers attempt to rob bank customers who were leaving the bank ATM at about 3.00 pm Market road within the main town which have witnessed a rise in robbery and other violent crime of recent.

 

Confirming the report when contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said the police at ‘A’ Division, Ughelli received a distress call that a gang of 3 armed robbers were operating closed to one of the new generation banks along Market road Ughelli and they swung into action immediately.

DSP Onovwakpoyeya disclosed further that on getting to the scene of the operation, the robbers entered their car and zoomed off but the police gave them a hot chase that later resulted in gun duel along Isoko road within the main town which led to the killing of two of the three robbers as the third escaped with a gun wound.

 

A source at the police station who spoke anonymously said two locally made pistols, many lives cartridges, one expended cartridge and one Golf 3 Red car with registration number AJ 220 EFR were recovered.

 

“We received a distress call from the public that a gang of three armed robbers are operating within the Ughelli, along Market road and we swung into action immediately on sighting the police the robbers opened fire on the police and we immediately returned fire to them, and with our more superior power, two of them were gun down and one escaped with bullet wounds.”

 

According to police image maker, DSP Onome said an investigation is ongoing to arrest the flying suspect.

 

It would be recalled that on Wednesday last week, a gang three armed robbers specialized in trailing unsuspecting POS operators and bank customers, trailed POS operator from one of the new generation banks in Ughelli metropolis to his house in Uduere Street, shot him severally with two others, they left one dead and cart away the money.

In a similar development, a five-man gang of armed robbers terrorizing Ighwrekan and its environs in Ughelli south LGA were caught after robbing a POS operator at Ighwrekan Community and two of them burnt, while 3 others escaped as mob youths gave them hot chase.

 

Earlier, the Police and Vigilantes have vowed to make Ughelli North and its environs unhabitable for armed robbers, kidnappers and other related crime perpetrators to dwell.
