The family of the late Levi Opara, a 46-year-old from Ezedibia, Emekuku, Owerri North Council Area of Imo State, has called upon the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Governor Hope Uzodimma to intervene in the case of their father’s alleged murder by police officers.
According to the Opara family, a family dispute between Levi Opara and his wife, Mrs. Chioma Opara, led to the involvement of a police informant, Anthony Nneji, who took the matter to the Tiger Base police in Imo.
Levi Opara was subsequently arrested on the 15th of October, 2023.
Upon visiting the police station with family members and relatives, the Opara family was informed that their father had passed away.
The family alleges that the corpse of Levi Opara showed signs of bruises and knife cuts on his neck, indicating a possible case of police brutality.
The family petitioned the Inspector General of Police, leading to the arrest and detention of the suspected officers.
An autopsy was also carried out, and the report was sent to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Umuahia.
Despite the family’s request for the immediate arraignment of those involved in the murder, the process has been delayed, causing concern among the family and the community.
The Director of Public Prosecution in Owerri, Imo State, has recommended the arraignment of the police officers and others involved in the murder based on the police file sent to the Ministry of Justice.
The Opara family is now seeking the intervention of the Inspector General of Police and the Imo State Governor to ensure that justice is served in the case of their father’s alleged murder.
The delay in the arraignment of the suspects has raised concerns about potential interference in the case.
The Opara family and the community hope that their call for justice will be heard and that those responsible for the alleged murder will be held accountable for their actions.
