16 Political Parties to Participate in Edo Election, Says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 16 political parties will be participating in the upcoming Edo State off-cycle governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

According to a statement by the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, political parties have been reminded that they must conduct their primaries within the state in line with Sections 84(4) and 5(b) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The commission also emphasized the importance of political parties adhering to their respective constitutions and guidelines to avoid unnecessary postponement, arbitrary changes of venues, and wholesale changes of delegates’ lists.

Political parties were given a deadline of February 4, 2024, to notify the commission of their preferred modes and dates of primaries, as required by Section 82 of the Electoral Act 2022.

As the electoral body prepares to deploy its monitoring teams, it is crucial for political parties to ensure that their primaries are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

Failure to comply with the guidelines could lead to a high number of pre-election litigations.

The announcement of the participating political parties in the Edo election highlights the importance of a transparent and well-organized electoral process.

As the election date approaches, it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize the adherence to the Electoral Act and maintain a peaceful environment for a successful and fair election.
