16 dead, 27 injured in Kaduna-Abuja expressway accident

A tragic accident on the Kaduna-Abuja highway claimed 16 lives and injured 27 others on Sunday, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command.

The Sector Commander, Mr. Kabir Nadabo, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and revealed that the accident happened at Audu Jhangon village along the highway at 05:20 hrs. He said that a Daf trailer with registration number KUJ 430XC, carrying excessive cargo, skidded off the road and plunged into a ditch.

He said that the driver was likely speeding and tired.

The rescue operations were carried out by the joint teams of RS1.114 Zhipe Unit Command and RS1.16B Dutse Outpost.

The accident involved 65 people, out of whom 16 died and 27 were wounded.

He said that the wounded were rushed to the closest hospital for medical attention.

Nadabo said that he went to the site of the accident to oversee the rescue efforts and the removal of the dead bodies to the mortuary.

He also ordered the tow truck to clear the road of the wrecked trailer. He said that the operation was still in progress, but the road was open for traffic.
