Woman escapes mob attack over alleged witchcraft in Delta

 A 52 year old woman, Mrs Patiece Amuko on Monday caused uproar at the Sapele Police Station in Sapele, Delta State after a police officer simply referred to as Mercy claimed she found her at the back of her courtyard at the wee hours and confessed that she was a witch and begged to be let out.

ADVOCATE gathered that the courtyard can only be accessed through the Police Officer’s sitting room which at about 5.10 am when the incident was said to have happened was still locked.

The police woman who was shocked then raised alarm and called the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ekong Ekong who took the woman to the Sapele main Station, which was not far from the scene of the incident.

The visible troubled woman, who claims to be a witch, said she was on her way from a mission in Benin City in Edo State and was on her way back when she suddenly found herself in the court yard.

A Police source who spoke to us anonymously said;  ”Mercy said she heard a sound as if something fell and when she came out, she was shocked to find this woman at the back of her house, which is a courtyard, only through the Main room you can get to the back of the house that was highly fenced, scared, she then raised alarm before calling the DPO, who then took the lady to the Station, and she has been saying she is a witch” the police source who begged for anonymity said.

The Police, probably to forestall the thousands of people who thronged the Station and were beginning to rain abuse and throw stones at the woman quickly filed in charges and was rushed to the court, where the presiding Judge discharged and acquitted her while the Police was advised to detain her for safety purpose.

However, Miss Bridget Amuko, who claim to be the woman’s daughter refute the allegation that her mother was a witch ”she has mental illness and has been sick even before we were born” she was heard shouting at the crowd who milled around her.

Another of her son, Oyibo was seen narrating to some other persons that her mother had left home the previous day ”she told us she was going to see her sister, and we have been looking for her. Someone told us that they saw her at the Central Hospital yesterday and when we got there, she was nowhere, only to be called that she is in the Police Station” the son who is in tears said.
