U.S. CDC Donates Essential Laboratory Equipment to NCDC for Disease Outbreak Response

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has donated essential laboratory equipment to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) to bolster Nigeria’s disease outbreak emergency response.

The equipment, which includes biosafety cabinets, sample collection materials, essential laboratory equipment, and personal protective equipment, was received by Dr Jide Idris, Director-General of NCDC.

Dr Farah Husain, Programme Director of the CDC Division, Global Health Protection, emphasized the importance of the equipment in sustaining the quality and high outputs of Nigeria’s laboratories.

She highlighted the U.S.’s commitment to working with Nigeria to develop response capacity and protect the health of its citizens.

Nigeria is currently facing several disease outbreaks, such as Lassa fever, diphtheria, and meningitis, making the need for increased laboratory capacity and resources essential for quick detection and effective outbreak response.

Dr Idris, NCDC Director-General, expressed gratitude for the donation and assured the U.S. government that the equipment would be judiciously put to use.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving health security and reducing disease incidents.

The donation, which took place at the National Reference Laboratory, underscores the U.S. and Nigeria’s shared commitment to providing healthcare in Nigeria.

It highlights the significance of international collaboration in addressing global health challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of populations worldwide.

This gesture by the U.S. CDC not only strengthens Nigeria’s disease detection and response capabilities but also sets an example of the global community’s efforts to support health security in the face of emerging infectious diseases and other health threats.
