President Bola Tinubu pointed to weak local governance as a key driver of Nigeria's security crisis. He made the comments during his nationwide June 12 Democracy Day broadcast on Friday.
According to the president, his administration has pushed for financial autonomy of all 774 local councils. This move, he argued, would help democracy reach ordinary Nigerians at the grassroots level.
Tinubu noted that ineffective local government administration remains a major stumbling block for national progress. "The insecurity we are addressing is partly due to the collapse of grassroots governance," he told the nation.
He stressed that when citizens don't feel democracy's benefits, the system itself becomes weakened. Without stronger local institutions, he warned, security challenges will persist across Nigeria's communities.
