Novak Djokovic's French Open campaign has ended in shock. The 39-year-old Serbian legend fell to teenager Joao Fonseca in the third round.
Fonseca, just 19, pulled off the greatest victory of his career. He stormed back from two sets down to triumph 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5.
The Brazilian's win lasted four hours and 53 minutes. It ranks as the second-longest match at Roland Garros this year.
Djokovic started strong, taking the opening set 6-4. He grabbed the second set with an identical 6-4 scoreline.
But the tide turned dramatically. A visibly fatigued Djokovic couldn't match Fonseca's intensity in the remaining sets.
Fonseca claimed the third set 6-3. He then edged the fourth 7-5 despite nearly losing control early on.
In the decisive fifth set, the youngster erased a 3-1 deficit. He served out the match to seal an unforgettable triumph.

Yet Fonseca proved far too resilient. His fearless approach exposed weaknesses in Djokovic's game that few had anticipated.

He praised his vanquished opponent with respect. "What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step on the court against him—it was my first time—so I thank him, I am very happy," Fonseca added.
Djokovic acknowledged his mistake in allowing the two-set advantage to slip away. Still, he showed grace in defeat.
"Huge credit to Joao for really deserving to win the match," the 23-time Grand Slam champion noted. According to him, Fonseca played the crucial moments in sets four and five far better.
The Serbian star elaborated on Fonseca's performance. "I congratulated him and told him he deserved to win and he played an unbelievable match," Djokovic explained to reporters.
He acknowledged the hype surrounding the Brazilian teenager. "The kind of tennis we've seen him play has created a lot of hype around him, and I think we've all seen that," in his words.
Djokovic carries 101 ATP titles in his storied career. However, he hasn't won any tournament so far this year.
