A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the concerns raised by Northern leaders regarding the proposed tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly.
In an interview with selected journalists in Delta State, Nwaoboshi, former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the importance of inclusivity and transparency in implementing these far-reaching economic policies.
Speaking on the tax reform bills, which aim to broaden the tax base, reduce evasion, and increase revenue generation, Senator Nwaoboshi acknowledged the reforms as overdue measures needed to strengthen Nigeria's fiscal framework. "These reforms are crucial for funding public goods and services, reducing our dependence on oil revenues, and driving economic growth," he stated. However, he cautioned that the concerns raised by Northern governors and other stakeholders should not be overlooked.
"The states in the North have expressed legitimate fears about the potential impact of these reforms, given their limited resources compared to other regions. Their input is vital to ensure that the reforms are equitable and do not disproportionately burden any particular segment of society. Government exists for the people, and we must listen to their voices," Nwaoboshi remarked.
He drew a parallel between the ongoing debate and the Resource Control movement championed by former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori. While Resource Control initially gained momentum, it was later abandoned due to concerns over Nigeria’s unity. Nwaoboshi warned that similar apprehensions surrounding the tax reforms must be addressed to prevent national disintegration.
"My primary concern is preserving Nigeria's unity. We cannot afford to dismiss the reservations of our Northern brothers. Instead, we must engage in open, honest, and inclusive discussions to create a tax system that promotes fairness and national cohesion," he said.
On the broader economic reforms implemented by President Tinubu, Nwaoboshi lauded the administration's bold initiatives, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates. "These are difficult but necessary steps to revitalize our economy. They will attract foreign investment, boost economic competitiveness, and ultimately create jobs and reduce poverty," he stated.
The senator, however, acknowledged the immediate challenges faced by Nigerians due to rising living costs. He urged the federal government to prioritize social welfare programs to cushion the effects of the reforms on vulnerable populations. "The President's intentions are good, but the government should address the hardships faced by the masses. Policies are meant to benefit the people, and when they complain, it is the responsibility of leadership to listen and act," he emphasized.
Nwaoboshi expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the reforms, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and steadfast during this transitional phase. "Our economy was like a patient on life support, and healing takes time. With perseverance and collective effort, Nigeria will emerge stronger, more prosperous, and more resilient," he added.
As the National Assembly continues deliberations on the tax reform bills, Senator Nwaoboshi called for thorough and inclusive discussions that reflect the diverse perspectives and interests of all Nigerians. "By engaging stakeholders from all regions and fostering a spirit of collaboration, we can develop policies that reduce inequality, promote economic growth, and strengthen national unity," he concluded.
The senator’s remarks come amid growing debate over President Tinubu’s sweeping economic reforms, underscoring the need for balanced and people-centered policies in the face of significant transformation.
