Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has taken the helm of ECOWAS, winning election as chairman of the regional bloc's Authority of Heads of State and Government. He secured the position during the 69th Ordinary Session held in Sierra Leone.
Faye replaces Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio, who held the post since June 2025. Bio had taken over from Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, who completed his tenure and formally passed leadership to him at the 67th Ordinary Session in Abuja.
The timing of Faye's election is significant. ECOWAS faces mounting security threats, democratic backsliding, and fractured ties with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, all of which recently quit the bloc.
As the new chairman, Faye is expected to rebuild regional cooperation and maintain dialogue with the departed states to stabilise West Africa. His team will also push institutional reforms, strengthen democratic governance, boost accountability and expand youth involvement in decision-making.
At 46, Faye represents a fresh wave of African leadership. Officials and analysts believe he'll inject new momentum into regional diplomacy and inject enthusiasm into ECOWAS' reform agenda at a particularly fragile moment.
