Senator Nwoko sets the record straight on senate suspension of Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan

"Defending the Senate’s Integrity Against Misrepresentation and Emotional Manipulation."

It is imperative to separate facts from sensationalism and resist the growing trend of exploiting gender sentiments to excuse disorderly conduct within the Senate. The legislative chamber is not a battleground for personal grievances or emotional outbursts but a place of order, structured debate, and democratic principles.

Clarifying the Suspension: It Was About Conduct, Not Gender

The recent public outcry over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been distorted into a false narrative of gender victimization. Let it be clear: the Senate did not deliberate on her petition against the Senate President—something she herself has acknowledged. The matter before the Senate was her conduct on the chamber floor, which violated the decorum expected of lawmakers.

Seat Reallocation: A Standard Senate Practice

The issue began with a simple seat reallocation—an established practice in the Senate. I, too, have been moved three times. This is a routine process that occurs whenever a senator leaves due to death, defection, or other circumstances. The seating arrangement is adjusted accordingly to maintain party balance and uphold the principle of seniority.

This was not an action targeted at Senator Natasha or any specific individual. It is a longstanding tradition that ensures order within the Senate. Everyone moves—not just one person—and the process is executed fairly.

Senator Natasha's Disruption of Senate Proceedings

When asked to move to a new seat, Senator Natasha refused. Rather than complying, she became disruptive, raising her voice and shouting, “I am not scared of you!”—a scene that was captured on video.

At that moment, it ceased to be about a seat; it became a matter of discipline, respect, and order in the Senate. If every senator resisted simple procedural adjustments in such a manner, the Senate would become ungovernable.

The Senate Followed Due Process

Following the disruption, the Senate Committee on Ethics invited her for a disciplinary hearing, as is standard procedure. The committee gathered testimonies from those present, and the findings were clear—her conduct on the floor was unacceptable. The committee recommended her suspension.

During this process, I personally reached out to her. As a lawyer, I understand the importance of due process and giving individuals an opportunity to defend themselves. I advised her to apologize, offering to speak on her behalf. Her response? “I did nothing wrong.”

I told her plainly: she was wrong. The video evidence and witness reports all confirmed her disruptive behavior.

This Is Not About Gender—It Is About Conduct

Some voices have attempted to frame this as an attack on women in politics. This is a deliberate manipulation of facts. Nigeria has many respected female politicians who have made their mark through discipline, strategic engagement, and adherence to institutional processes.

The Senate is not—and has never been—against women. However, no lawmaker, regardless of gender, is above the rules of the chamber. The issue at hand is not about gender discrimination but about the expectation that all senators must conduct themselves with decorum and respect for the institution they serve.

The Senate Did Not Deliberate on Sexual Harassment Allegations

Another false narrative being peddled is that the Senate suspended her in retaliation for her sexual harassment allegations against the Senate President. This is completely untrue.

The Senate never deliberated on any such claim. That matter is before the courts, and only the judiciary can decide its merits.

It is also worth noting that Senator Natasha continued to travel with the Senate President for official assignments well after the alleged incident, often in the presence of her husband and others. These facts raise questions about the credibility of her claims.

The Role of Her Husband in Escalating the Situation

I was also deeply disappointed by the reaction of Senator Natasha’s husband. Rather than de-escalating the matter privately, he chose to heighten tensions. When he sent me his statement, I told him directly that this issue could have been handled better.

As someone who was friends with the Senate President long before marrying Natasha, he had every opportunity to resolve the matter through dialogue. Instead, his actions contributed to unnecessary public drama.

The Senate Must Uphold Discipline and Order

The Senate cannot afford to bow to emotional blackmail or social media outrage fueled by half-truths. If discipline is abandoned for sentiment, the institution will descend into chaos.

This is not about suppressing voices; it is about upholding the dignity of the Senate and ensuring that every member, regardless of gender or political affiliation, adheres to the same standards of conduct.

Conclusion: Leadership Requires Responsibility

True leadership comes with responsibility. Every senator, male or female, must uphold the integrity of the Red Chamber through their words and actions.

The Senate must stand firm against any attempt to undermine its authority through emotional appeals and misrepresentation. Our democracy thrives on strong, disciplined institutions—not on theatrics.
