Senate to examine N5bn luxury yacht for president

The Senate has revealed its intention to investigate the controversial N5 billion presidential yacht and the issues surrounding it.

This was the resolution of the Senate Committee on Navy, led by Senator Gbenga Daniel, the APC representative for Ogun East.

His media aide, Steve Oliyide, issued a statement on Wednesday to announce this.

The report on the yacht purchase has sparked a lot of reactions from Nigerians, who accused the Presidency of being insensitive.

The lawmaker said that the committee had decided to probe the matter and the facts behind the yacht within a week.

Daniel said, “The news of the yacht purchase has generated a lot of attention since it broke in the media.

“Nigerians have expressed their views and criticisms, with many of them unhappy about how such a luxury item can be part of the Supplementary Budget.

“We have seen the need for a thorough investigation because of the conflicting and contradictory reports in the media about the yacht purchase.“

The committee chairman added, “The main goal is to find out the truth, clear the doubts, and give the public a clear and complete picture of the situation.

“Many Nigerians appreciate the role of the Senate committee in this regard, as it shows a significant step towards transparency and accountability in the government by the Senate.”

The former Ogun state governor also said, “The committee also agreed to visit all naval facilities in the country, with the aim of prioritising training and welfare of naval personnel and veterans, while stressing the need for more funding for the Nigerian Navy to carry out their vital roles in the nation’s economic and security sectors.

“The committee also resolved to support the modernization of the Nigerian Navy’s fleet, improve its operational capabilities, and advocate for naval research and development agencies.
