Security forces have successfully stopped a bandit attack on two communities in Zamfara State. The assault targeted Kanoma Town and Gidan Daji Village in Maru Local Government Area.

Heavily armed gunmen struck on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. They carried RPGs, machine guns, anti-aircraft weapons, and rifles.

Police spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar confirmed residents called for help immediately. A quick response team was deployed right away.

Officers from Maru Division, military personnel under Operation Fansan Yamma, members of the Violence Crime Response Unit, and local vigilantes joined forces. The Divisional Police Officer led the combined operation.

Gunfire erupted as security forces confronted the attackers. The bandits were forced to flee the area.

Six gunmen died during the exchange. They were riding on two motorcycles.

According to Abubakar, many more suspects escaped toward nearby forests with injuries. Their exact number remains unclear.

No soldiers, police officers, or civilians lost their lives in the operation. All residents in both communities remained safe.

Abubakar noted that authorities have strengthened security across the region. Patrols now run constantly to keep the peace.

He promised security agencies will hunt down the fleeing suspects. The operation continues in the surrounding forests.

Police leadership says it's committed to protecting both lives and property. The command won't rest until the area is fully secure.

Residents are being asked to share useful information with security forces. Local cooperation remains crucial for tracking down remaining attackers.
