Gunfire erupted in Osogbo on Saturday when political thugs shot an APC member. Taofeek Mustapha survived the attack in the Oluode-Aranyin area.
State police confirmed the shooting as the August governorship election approaches. Rival camps have been clashing across Osun in recent weeks.
Mustapha told investigators he was targeted for wearing an AMBO campaign cap. "I put on the AMBO crested cap when the shooting occurred," he recounted to reporters.
According to him, thugs chased him down after spotting his party allegiance. He ran for safety as bullets flew around him in the neighborhood.
"I did not wait but was shot. I cried for help before they retrieved back into the vehicle and drove away," the victim explained.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi told journalists an investigation has commenced immediately. Detectives are working to identify those responsible for the attack.
Last month, security agencies and electoral bodies held a peace meeting with political parties. Officials urged all camps to commit to peaceful campaigns and elections.
Neither the ruling Accord Party nor the APC attended that gathering. Their absence raised eyebrows among observers monitoring the political temperature in the state.
