Seaports to Halt Operations as Maritime Workers Participate in NLC Protest

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced its participation in the two-day nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The decision comes after the NLC declared a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27-28, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to implement measures against widespread hardship following the removal of fuel subsidies on October 2, 2023.

According to a statement by the Head of Media at MWUN, Kennedy Ikemefuna, the union’s decision to join the protest is in strict compliance with the directive issued by the NLC to its affiliate members nationwide.

The NLC believes that if the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, had been honored and implemented, it would have significantly reduced the suffering and hardships faced by Nigerian workers and the general population due to the ill-conceived and ill-implemented policies.

As a result of the MWUN’s decision to participate in the NLC protest, seaports across the country are expected to halt operations for the duration of the two-day strike.

This move will likely have a considerable impact on the country’s economy, as seaports play a crucial role in the import and export of goods and services.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria’s decision to join the NLC’s two-day nationwide protest highlights the growing discontent among Nigerian workers and the general population over the government’s handling of the fuel subsidy removal and its aftermath.

The halt in seaport operations during the strike period is expected to further underscore the importance of addressing the concerns of the Nigerian workforce and the general public in order to ensure a more stable and prosperous future for the country.
