Rain forces City FC’s NNL match into being abandoned

By Aderonke Ojo
Heavy rains on Monday in Abuja forced the 2022/2023 Nigeria National League (NNL) match between city rivals City Football Club and Family Worship  Centre (FWC) Champions FC into being abandoned.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Northern Conference Group A2 Match Day 7 fixture was abandoned after 72 minutes of play with the scores at 1-0.
The first half of the match played at the Area 3 football pitch had ended goalless after City FC had missed several clear goalscoring chances.
On resumption of the second half, both teams continued from where they stopped, until in the 62nd minute when Emmanuel Ihezuorochi scored.
But this was two minutes into the rains.
The game however got to a halt in the 72nd minute, when the centre referee adjudged that the downpour was too heavy for the match to continue.
The referee initially took the players off the pitch with the view to see if the rains would stop.
By then the pitch was so water-logged that the ball could not bounce or roll and the decision was eventually made to abandon the game.
But the rains did not stop to allow for play to be restarted.
The organisers later announced that the match would continue on Tuesday  by 7 a.m. at the same venue.
NAN reports that this season so far, City FC have won two matches, lost two while drawing one, while FWC Champions FC have drawn two and lost three.
Both teams are with an outstanding match each.
