Political Parties Unite in Nasarawa: APC and PDP Sign Peace Pact Ahead of Supreme Court Ruling on Gubernatorial Dispute

In a display of unity and commitment to peace, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State have signed a peace pact ahead of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the gubernatorial dispute.

The signing of the pact, facilitated by the state police command, took place on January 16, 2024, in Lafia, the state capital.

The peace accord comes at a time when political tensions are high in the state, following the tribunal and appellate court’s decisions on the contested March 18, 2023, governorship election.

The Court of Appeal later overturned the tribunal’s decision to declare David Ombugadu, the PDP candidate, to be the duly elected governor.

The Supreme Court is set to hear the PDP’s appeal on January 16, 2024, and the signing of the peace pact is seen as a proactive measure to ensure that any outcome will be met with civility and respect for the rule of law.

During the signing of the peace pact, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace before, during, and after the Supreme Court’s judgment.

He also warned that anyone found guilty of causing trouble would be dealt with decisively, regardless of their political affiliation or social status.

Key representatives from both parties were present at the signing, including the state Chairman of the APC, Aliyu Bello, and the state Organising Secretary of the PDP, Yahaya Bunu.

Both parties pledged to uphold the peace accord and ensure that their members and supporters remain calm and law-abiding throughout the process.

As the political landscape in Nasarawa State remains uncertain, the signing of the peace pact between the APC and the PDP is a positive step towards ensuring a peaceful resolution to the gubernatorial dispute.

The Supreme Court’s decision will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the state’s political future, but both parties’ commitment to peace gives hope for a peaceful resolution.
